“I was not going to extend this endless war,” he said.
On Tuesday afternoon, President Biden addressed the nation for the first time since the United States completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan. He provided additional insight and asserted that the decision was made following “the unanimous recommendation of the Joint Chiefs and of all of our commanders on the ground” to stick to the August 31 deadline.
“Their view was that ending our military mission was the best way to protect the lives of our troops and secure the prospects of civilian departures for those who wanted to leave Afghanistan, including in the weeks and months ahead, ” the president said. “I was not going to extend this forever war, and I was not going to extend a forever exit,” he added.
He credited the hard work of the American troops at the Kabul airport and in conducting the largest-ever airlift in US history. “They have done it with unmatched courage, professionalism, and resolve,” he stated.
In the two weeks of evacuations, the U.S. has delivered around 120,000 U.S. citizens, Afghans, and foreigners to safety out of Afghanistan.
